The Rev. David C. Wayland, 71, went to his eternal rest on Jan. 20, 2012, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va. after a long term chronic illness and a short hospitalization for an infection.

For a number of years, Rev. Wayland split his time between the D.C. area and his second home in Hedgesville, W.Va. He had served churches in Charles Town, W.Va. area and Hagerstown, Md. before a long career as a Pastoral Psychotherapist in the Washington, D.C. area. He was on the staff of the Pastoral Counseling and Consultation Centers before going into private practice.

Rev. Wayland was born in Parkersburg, played basketball at Marshall University and studied in theater. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and Alpha Psi Omega Dramatic Fraternity. As a youth he was a member of the Parkersburg Chapter of the DeMolay.

After a brief career in radio broadcasting, Rev. Wayland graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1968 and was ordained in the West Virginia Diocese where he served several churches including Zion Episcopal, St. Philips, St. Andrews, Grace and Middleway in the Charles Town area. He also served St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown, Md. and served as interim priest at several more churches.

He continued his lifelong love of sports serving as coach or assistant coach on several youth soccer and basketball teams in Springfield, Va. for years and was an avid golfer playing at Springfield Country Club and at The Woods.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, the Rev. Rose Herr Wayland; two sons, Matthew C. Wayland of Alexandria, Va. and Mark D. Wayland of Arlington, Texas; two daughters-in-law, Jennifer Sadler of Alexandria and Jamie Wayland of Arlington; three grandchildren, Parker, Landon, and Viviana; and one sister, Melody Wayland of Arlington, Va. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Elisabeth Raymond.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Martinsburg and will be followed by a reception.

Barbara S. McKibben 70 of Parkersburg was received into the arms of the angels surrounded by her family on Jan. 62012.

 

She was born in Parkersburg the daughter of the late George Harold and Beatrice Clara Wright Wilson.

 

She was a homemaker and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She enjoyed working in her flowers, sewing and spending time with her family , especially her grandchildren.

 

She is survived by her husband of 52 yearsCarl Wayne McKibben, her children, Michael Wayne McKibben of Parkersburg and Karen Lynn Knopp and husband Scot tof Parkersburg, her grandchildren, Brandon Patton and wife Brittany Jordan Patton and Aaron Patton, her great-grandson, Brody Patton who was "the apple of Granny's eye", one brother, William Lee Wilson of WashingtonW.Va., and her sister, Paulette Woodyard of Washington.

 

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg with Pastor Leon Valentine officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Today, Jan. 9, 2012.

Houston "Pete" Whitaker, 73, of Vienna, passed away Oct. 1, 2011, after a courageous fight with a lung infection.

He was born Sept. 17, 1938, in Arlington, Va., a son to Leonard and Catherine Whitaker.

He was a graduate of PHS, class of 1958, and was retired from Dupont. Pete was an avid golfer and loved spending time with friends, neighbors and family. He was a member of Wayside United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Men, Masonic Lodge 172 Vienna, Shriners, UCT 135, and was president of the Worthington Senior Men's Golf Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sara Kirtpatrick.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Ann Whitaker; children, Beth Whitaker Connolly and husband Rick, Jeff Liesure and wife, Sherri, Shanda Kirtpatrick and husband, John, and Paula Marshall and husband, Steve; and grandchildren, Ellie Connolly, Sean Connolly, Haley Marshall, Steven Marshall and Samantha Liesure.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Wayside United Methodist Church, Vienna, with the Rev. Pat Kerr officiating. A private burial will take place in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Kathryn A. Crum, 70, of Frazier's Bottom, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at Hubbard Hospice House West.

Kathryn was a retired Registered Nurse from CAMC Memorial Hospital and taught nursing at the Fayette County School of Nursing. She attended the First Baptist Church in St. Albans, W.Va.

She was a 1995 graduate of WV Tech and a graduate of Camden-Clark School of Nursing. She also attended CAMC Memorial Kanawha Valley School of Nursing and the University of Charleston.

Kathryn loved quilting and knitting. Lots of people have warm feet because of her beautiful quilts she made and gave them as gifts to everyone.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Edward Crum of Frazier's Bottom; son, William H. "Bill" Crum (Debbie) of Lancaster, Ohio; daughter, Kim Crum Modesitt (Rodney) of Cutler, Ohio; brothers, Joe Duckworth of Davisville, W.Va., Robert Duckworth of Mineral Wells, W.Va. and John Duckworth of Mineral Wells; sister, Betty Reebrook and Mary Shriver of Mineral Wells and five grandchildren, Jennifer, Wesley, Sarah, Matthew and Alex.

Dorothy Epler Renfro, 71, of Melbourne, Fla., passed away Sept. 15, 2011, under the loving care of family and Hospice.

She was born Aug. 16, 1940, to the late Leo and Gay Epler of Parkersburg, W.Va.

Dorothy was a retired educator and longtime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She was a founding member of Riverside Artists Gallery and active in the DAR. She will be remembered by all as a loving wife, mother and stepmother, caring friend, and devoted grandmother.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, John M. Renfro of Melbourne; daughter, Hannah McDonald (and husband Daniel) of Locust Grove, Va.; son, Douglas Burnside (and wife Shelley) of Richmond, Va.; brother, Robert Epler of Melbourne Fla.; sister, Eleanor Belcher of Rockport, W.Va.; four stepchildren; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Suntree United Methodist Church, Melbourne, Fla.

Erma "Gay" Epler, 91, of Parkersburg, passed away Sept. 3, 2010, at her daughter's home in Rockport under the loving care of family and Hospice.

She was born April 4, 1919, in Wirt County, one of eight children of the late Charles Franklin and Ida M. Fultz Heater.

She had been a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, being active with the United Methodist Women, KoCo, Crusaders Sunday School Class and headed the nursery for nearly 30 years.

"Gay" is survived by her son, Robert Eugene Epler of Melborne, Fla.; daughters, Dorothy M. Renfro and husband, John, of Melborne, Fla., and Eleanor R. Belcher and husband, Mike, of Rockport; four grandchildren, Hannah McDonald, Douglas Burnside, Gary Belcher Jr. and Gina Belcher; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, "Gay" was preceded in death by her husband, Leo E. Epler in 2002; and five brothers and two sisters.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Dr. William R. Thomas and the Rev. Jeff Mayfield officiating. Burial will be at Skidmore Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday and prior to the services on Tuesday.

Geraldine "Jerry" Harris, 90, of Vienna, W.Va., passed away Friday at her residence. She was born Feb. 8, 1921 in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Everett K. and Della Hinzeman Parrish.

Jerry worked at Kroger for 34 years. During WWII she worked at the O'Ames Company making shovels. She is a former member of the Order of Eastern Star in Parkersburg and was a lifelong member of the Beechwood Presbyterian Church in Parkersburg.

Jerry will always be remembered for her thoughtfulness, generosity, and her beautiful smile.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandy Gault (Chester) of Vienna and Patricia Wamsley of Riverview, Fla.; two sisters, Bernice Bibbee of Parkersburg and Betty Wesson of Belpre, Ohio; three brothers, Everett Parrish of Vienna and Bob Parrish and Bill Parrish, both of Washington, W.Va.; her grandchildren, Michael Wamsley, Mark Wamsley (Pam), Bethani Perez, John Wamsley, Greg Gault (Megan), Jay Wamsley (Stacey), and Brad Gault (Kim); and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Glen Harris; three brothers, Donald, Chester and Richard Parrish, and two great-granddaughters.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna with Rev. Steve Melton officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen North Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.

Robert Allan Elberfeld, 71, Tuppers Plains, passed away on July 12, 2011, at his residence.

He was born on Feb. 27, 1940, in Parkersburg, son of the late Betty Renner Deem (Francis) and Robert Elberfeld (Charlotte).

He was a graduate of Parkersburg High School, Class of 1958. He received his B.A. From Marietta College in 1962 and was member and President of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. He received his M.A. Degree from The Ohio State University in 1964. He was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and retired after 32 years of service. Allan was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. He was president of Elberfeld Farm, Inc. For the past ten years. He was an avid ornithologist and proud to be associated with the Mountwood Bird Club. He was a board member for the Friends of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Allan was also a published author and most recently wrote for the Route 7 Report.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Elizabeth (Stout) Elberfeld; daughter, Andrea Elizabeth Elberfeld Merrill and her husband, Joel Leslie Merrill; granddaughter, Samantha Elizabeth Swartz; brother, Stan Coates (JoAnn); sister, Julie Elberfeld Dillon; nieces and nephews, Josh and Bobby Coates, Rebecca Elberfeld Hoge (Jack); great-niece, Meta Hoge; and aunt, Carolyn Renner Hall (Van).

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Stephan Renner Elberfeld (Beverly).

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Anderson McDaniel Funeral Home in Pomeroy, gathering at The Farm to immediately follow. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lois Annabelle Watson, 71, of Washington, W.Va., died June 23, 2011 at the Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.

She was born Aug. 27, 1939 in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Robert Bruce and Nell Ruth Rader Mills.

She worked for Corning Glass earlier in life, was a devoted homemaker and a member of the 10th Avenue Church of God.

She is survived by her husband, Harry C. "Tip" Watson; two children, Brenda S. Watson of Vincent, Ohio, Steven A. Watson of Ripley; five grandchildren, Carrie Hupp, Tyler Wright, Brandon Watson, Sarah Wright, Benjamin Watson; three great-grandchildren, Kiara, Dakota and Carter; one brother, Mark Mills of Parkersburg; and one sister, Peggy "Tootie" McClung of Parkersburg.

Paul R. Sutton, 76, of Parkersburg, passed away April 29, 2011, at Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio.

 

He was born Nov. 26, 1934, in Parkersburg, a son of the late W.O. and Anna Thorn Sutton.

 

Paul was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired construction worker and carpenter. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling and playing pool. He was a former member of American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg.

 

He is survived by one son, Mark Sutton of Vienna; five sisters, Hazel Mercer of Vienna, Virginia Heiby of Parkersburg, Norma Jean Reiver of Norfolk, Va., Judy Yocum of Parkersburg and Sharon Davis of Vienna; three brothers, Robet Sutton of Belpre, James Sutton of Parkersburg and Dick Sutton of Washington, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Harold Sutton.

 

Funeral services for Paul will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Green Street, Parkersburg, with Pastor Chuck Ferrell officiating. Howard Dale Gribble, 71, of Mineral Wells, W.Va., passed away Feb. 19, 2011, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 21, 1939, in Ritchie County, a son of Garoldine Day Gribble of Parkersburg and the late Hayward Gribble.

Mr. Gribble retired from E.I. Dupont Co. Washington Works after 37 years of service and was The Elder at 14th Avenue Gospel Mission Church in south Parkersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Deloris N. Eddy Gribble; two daughters, Debbie La Pan (Steve) of Washington, W.Va., and Sherry Steele (Brent) of Mineral Wells; three sisters, Carol Ann Gribble of Parkersburg, Mary Godfrey of Tennessee and Mona Strong (Roger) of Elizabeth; a sister-in-law, Sue Gribble of Parkersburg; two brothers, Tom Gribble (Carol) and Mark Gribble (Bonnie), all of Parkersburg; grandchildren, Justin Kidder, Khaila (Nick) Riffle, Dustin Steele, Andrew Sajdak-La Pan, Hope (Josh) Nickleson, Tori Cunningham-La Pan, Trent La Pan and Emmanuel La Pan; step-grandson, Corey Steele; foster grandchild, Ariel Willoughby; and great-grandchildren, Addyson, Valorie, Chandler, Seth and Blake.
